Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimas'!"

Traditional Japanese New Year's Greeting

The written Sino-Japanese (Kanji) character for the Japanese word: "Akemashite":

This character is composed of the two separate kanji for "Sun" (left) and "Moon" (right).

When combined, Sun + Moon gives the meaning of "dawning", "bright," "change."

The meaning(s) of the phrase "Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu" is somewhat complicated, as it is more like a poem than a normal spoken sentence - not to be translated directly - but rather to be understood, "felt," and its essence captured.

However, it could be roughly translated as, and seen to convey the message of:

"The year is changing... darkness gives way to light... new life begins... Congratulations!"
